Of course one difference is that I can't sample the local cuisine, so from time to time (if I can find out what the local dish is) I will cook it in my own kitchen. Local food is a very important part of every journey for me. I'm hoping that the cooking will deepen the experience of this virtual adventure for me.
The other difference is, that I don't need to look for accommodation, since I'm going to go to sleep in my own bed after each day of virtual traveling. I will still have a look out for special hotels and motels along the way though. After all motels are a part of the American culture, right?
I will post screenshots of all interesting stuff I find on my trip right here in my travel reports. I hope they all turn out ok. Obviously screenshots don't have the best of quality, but I'll see, if I can pep them up a bit with the Creative Kit at Google+. At the end of every U.S. state I'll post a .kmz file, to enable you to see the landmarks directly in Google Earth. It'll contain all the travel information like the route I took, sites i visited, etc. etc. If you are planning a real trip down Route 66 you even might be able to use this for your preparations.
Having to figure out how to work with Google Earth and other Google products is a positive side effect of my adventure. I will post the stuff I learned in some of the travel reports under Google Tips & Tricks. Maybe they are helpful for some of you guys too.
